Default 2 Ubuntu or not 2 Ubuntu

Salams

I have only ever used Window on my PC. In fact I even use I.E. as opposed to FF & O. So as u can see with computers I like to stay in the shallow end of the pool where I can touch the bottom.

But..... in a moment of weakness I have downloaded unbuntu 9. So b4 I insert the CD lets check my PC.

I have a C: drive with XP sp3 with 50Gb. The D Drive is for safe keeping of files/storage. I need MS Office & Adobe Photoshop (CS4).

The pre-install questions are;

Does ubuntu support MS Office & Adobe??
Can I install as dual operating system ubuntu/Win XP?

Of the 50 GB HDD WINXP has about 11Gb. Do I need to partition first or will ubuntu claim its own space in C?

Wa 'Alaikom Salam Akhi,

First of all Ubuntu can run on lower hardware specs just fine, so in this matter it defeats Windows without doubt, and let's get back to your questions:

Sorry, but it was a moment of power and glory, believe me you've taken the Red Pill to get out to the real world.

Ubuntu came with its own Office Suite called OpenOffice and it does most of what MS Office does but still, if you prefer the MS Office look and feel you can install it through WineHQ, I'll write you the Tuto to follow on how to install it later and after you complete the 1st step a.k.a installing Ubuntu.

For the Adobe I can tell that Adobe PhotoShop CS2 is working flawlessly and I've tested it, CS3 still has some issues but it was reported on WineHQ's wiki that CS4 works just fine, you can check the dedicated page for Adobe PhotoShop on the WineHQ's site: AdobePhotoshop - The Official Wine Wiki

I'll help in this matter too when it comes to this point.

Yep, so easy, so simple, just install Ubuntu the right way and it will dual boot XP, Vista, Leopard...etc

As of your prior specifications I think you need more space since Adobe alone will reserve about 1GB and don't forget the tmp file it creates each time you create a new file to track down the history's actions and the modifications and ...etc, and MS Office will take at least more than 2GB in a Basic installation and let alone the other Apps you're going to use.

What I suggest is that you free about a 16-20 GB of space then you should create your new partitions.

They should be 2 partitions like this:

1- A smaller partition for what is called SWAP as known on Windows Paging Memory, it plays a role like an additional Virtual Ram and it's very important, the theory says you should create a SWAP partition that is a double of your current RAM size (i.e if you have a 1GB RAM = You should create 2x1GB = 2GB SWAP Partition).

In windows create that SWAP partition and format it in any File System you want FAT, FAT32, NTFS...etc because Ubuntu is going to reformat it again later.

2- The main partition now is our OS partition, as I said before you should have at least between 16-20GB of space and format it in any FS too because Ubuntu will reformat this at the installation process as well.

P.S:
Use Partition Magic or diskmgmnt.msc to do the resizing of your already created HDD partitions and to create the new ones without losing your Windows parts.

After that Burn your CDROM or use the USB Pendrive method to install the OS, when you'll start the installation process, all the steps will look obvious but when it asks you how you would proceed with choosing a partition, be careful and change the Automatic way to the 2nd option that is the MANUAL way.

After that the new opened window will display your HDD partitions illustrated by a Tube laying down there and showing different colours to help you see how much does each partition uses from the HDD total space and you should recognize your newly created SWAP and OS partitions through their indicated size (they'll be called like /dev/sda4 /dev/sda# where # can be any number or even /dev/hda#).

Choose the SWAP partition and go down that window and find the NEW PARTITION button, click on it and it will show a little squared window where you should set the partition type to SWAP then click on OK, and it's done.

Now check the OS partition and click on the NEW PARTITION button again and inside the new opened Window choose PRIMARY PARTITION, then set the partition type to EXT4 JOURNALED and set the Mounting point to Slash (/), and it's done for this phase.

Click on next and fill in your username and password (you'll need them very much, so take this step seriously), if you don't mind you an check LOG ME AUTOMATICALLY if you're lazy to enter your password after each machine reboot.

And congrats for your new installed Operating System.

Tell me if you need any more help and/or if you have succeeded to do so then I'll tell you what to do next insha'a ALLAH.

You won't lose it if you followed the steps, it's easier than what you think.
